About Us
The Technological Literacy Division of the American Society for Engineering Education was accepted by the ASEE Board of Directors on January 22, 2006.
This group serves as a forum for those seeking to improve the broad understanding of all types of technology by all Americans. Technology affects nearly every aspect of modern life yet few people, including engineers, understand the technologies we use everyday, or recognize the complex interactions between society and technology. How can educators facilitate broad technological understanding? The committee aims to promote vigorous debate and is devoted to achieving progress on these issues. Both engineers and non-engineers are welcome to participate.
The primary objectives of this Division shall be:
- To provide a focus for the development of innovative technological literacy education curricula and delivery approaches.
- To provide a forum for the presentation and sharing of technological literacy educational initiatives and methods.
- To create a vital community engaged in technological literacy initiatives through fostering networking and dialog among students, educators and the public.
- To encourage the professional development of educators engaged in technological literacy.
- To increase awareness and participation of university faculty and industrial educators and partners in technological literacy initiatives.
- To promote and disseminate understanding of the relevance and applicability of technological literacy and the teaching and learning across the curriculum.
- To encourage the participation of non-engineering educators in the creation and delivery of technological literacy content.
- To synthesize and broadly disseminate lessons learned.
- To develop collaborations within ASEE, striving toward a goal that 50% of technological literacy sessions would be co-sponsored with other ASEE divisions and committees.
